Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), in the Operations and Resources Management Pillar (ORM); Mission Support Centre (MSC). The Logistics Officer, will be based in Kismayo and reports to the Chief of the Mission Support Center (MSC).

Within delegated authority, the Logistics Officer, will be responsible for the following duties:

Logistics:
• Prepares drafts of mission specific Standard Operating Procedures and submits to his/her supervisor for review.
• Manages logistics operations including management of logistics assets, material, contracts and personnel. Ensures timely, accountable and cost-effective delivery of cargo and personnel.
• Coordinates and provides logistics support to ongoing operations in a field mission.
• Ensures that logistics requirements take account of gender-specific needs.
• Participates in technical survey for missions and verification missions to troop contributing countries.
• Identifies requirements and shortfalls within his/her unit and submits to supervisor for logistics plans; and manages special logistics operations.
• Keeps required records of logistic activities and level of essential supplies.
• Leads the collection, analysis and dissemination of up-to-date information on the capabilities and status of Mission logistics support assets and the status of major projects and activities.
• Drafts Briefing Notes, Talking Points, Note-to-File, Fact Sheets and other relevant reports, vital to provide Mission Support Management with the updated information necessary for informed decision making.
• Conduct logistics briefing and presentations on as required basis.
Administration:
• Coordinates logistics activities with procurement, finance, human resources, and other sections. Follows up on legal and financial aspects of the logistic support.
• Ensures that accurate and complete accounting, reporting and internal control systems are functioning and that all relevant records are maintained.
• Coordinates logistics operations with other UN agencies, and other organizations.
• Ensure that supervised staff are adequately trained, cross trained; identifies additional training needs to achieve high working standards.
• Guides and supervises new/junior staff.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in land or air transport, logistics operations in military, commercial or international organizations, or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (5) years for candidates who possess first level university degree.
Relevant field experience in international or UN peacekeeping operations is required.
Experience in planning and coordinating logistics support to various military and police operations in highly volatile environment is desirable.
Knowledge of the Organization’s rules and regulations as they apply to integrated mission support and information management services in peacekeeping operations, is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in written English is required.
Assessment
