Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Medical Services Section of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS). The Head Nurse will be based in Mogadishu and reports to the Chief Medical Officer.

Within the delegated authority, the Head Nurse will be responsible for the following duties:
Clinical Duties:
•Assesses needs of client visiting tine “walk-in” clinic, provide care/advice accordingly or facilitates referral to the. UN medical officer or to an outside physician as indicated.
•Ensures preparedness of staff traveling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccine, instructions on malaria prophylaxis and other travel-related ailments, instruction on the
content and potential uses of the “Travel Kit”.
•Provides health education and participates in addressing work environment and Occupational’ health issues.
•Ensures proper co-ordination between nurses, medical officers, UN Security, and outside paramedics in case of medical emergencies.
Medical Administrative Duties:
•Collaborates with the Senior Medical-Officer and all physicians in developing objectives and establishing policies to ensure quality in the delivery of medical care.
•Day-to-day management of the CASEVAC Coordination Center. This involves collaboration with JOC to organize all activities related to CASEVAC/Medevac; with Aviation duty officers to ensure timely
evacuation of casualties and with the FMO, Head of Offices, SAOs, and Sector Medical Officers to carry out Casevac/Medevac for AMISOM, SNA troops and other civilian mission personnel.
•Develops, implements, and evaluates nursing objectives and guidelines related to health care-delivery in the clinic and the two satellite clinics.
•Ensure timely collection and analysis of CASEVAC/Medevac data.
•Maintain the medical records of CASEVAC/Medevac patients in the Earthmed platform
•Produce weekly and monthly CASEVAC/Medevac Reports in the mission.
•Participates in the establishment. implementation and evaluation. of health promotion and occupational programmes.
•Participates in the selection process of nursing staff, ensures their training, updates clinical nursing guidelines, and provides-the nursing staff with opportunities for continuing education.
•Identifies, evaluates, and recommends purchase of medical equipment and supplies. Maintains inventory of medical equipment, and supplies and oversee the activities of the AME team to ensure all medical
equipment for Casevac/Medevac operations are fit for the purpose.
•Coordinate with the FTS and Aviation team to enable the BI function for CASEVAC/Medevac operations.
•Represents the Medical Services in Mission Mass Casualty Response planning.
•Ensures proper collection of nursing statistics to assist the Senior Medical Officer in the preparation of the biennium budget.
•Ensures smooth running of the Performance Appraisal System for all nurses.
Supervisory Duties:
•Manages, supervises, and evaluates performance of nursing staff.
•Provides opportunities for nurses to consistently update their nursing skills.
•Functions as the Medical Emergency Coordinator (MEC) for the mission.
General:
•Performs other related duties as required.
Competencies
Professionalism: Knowledge of clinical, occupational and travel nursing. Formal training in CPR, preferably in BCLS and ACLS or equivalent in medical emergency. Knowledge of major medical office equipment and ability to use them in emergency situations. Education
High school diploma or equivalent. National registration and licenses are required. University degree (BS. or equivalent) in nursing is an asset.
Work Experience
At least 10 years-of progressively responsible experience in nursing is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five years for candidates who possess a first level university degree.
Knowledge of maintaining electronic medical records is desirable.
Postgraduate qualification in nursing management or equivalent is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

• This position is temporarily available until 30 June 2021. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
